Learning Together and Growing Together to Be All That We Can Be

What we are learning about this term:

Scots
This month we will be looking at different aspects of Scots language. This will involve looking at ‘The Gruffalo’s Wean’ and ‘The Jeelie Piece song’ to analyse and compare the language.  As well as this we will be learning about Robert Burns, Scottish traditions and Scottish food.

Literacy
During literacy the class will complete their class novel ‘The Suitcase Kid’. Throughout this text we will be exploring different Health and Wellbeing issues alongside continuing to develop Higher Order Reading skills.

Room 8 will also be focusing on non-fiction texts. In order to understand and develop an informed view, we will be learning to identify the main ideas and recognise the difference between fact and opinion in a variety of texts.

During writing we will be using the story mountain to help us to structure adventure texts correctly. To help, you could encourage your child to source and read an adventure text, as this will help inform their writing. We will continue to discuss and look at ways to make our writing more exciting by incorporating VCOP – vocabulary, connectives, openers and punctuation. Following the theme of non-fiction texts the children will also be learning how to write an explanation text with a focus on science.

Health and Wellbeing
This term within Health and Wellbeing the children will be learning about Relationships, Sexual Health and Parenthood (R.S.H.P) relating to the following aspects of Curriculum for Excellence:-

friendships and personalities, feelings/emotions, relationships, self-esteem and responsibilities. The children will also learn about steps to growing up, basic gender differences, animal life cycles, healthy lifestyles and what babies need.

How you can help your child (stage relevant):

Numeracy

  • Over the next term we will be focusing on subtraction and multiplication.  A list of multiplication tables that your child will be focussing on has been sent home in their homework jotter.  It is really important that each child has rapid recall with multiplication and division facts. Please continue to practise every week with your child.

Literacy

  • As part of the first ministers reading challenge reading for enjoyment will continue to be encouraged. It would be great if you could encourage this at home too as well as talking about books. This will help improve your spelling and comprehension skills as well as steal ideas to use in your writing!

Our Interdisciplinary Topic/Any other relevant information:

Interdisciplinary Learning –Burnside

  • As part of our IDL study ‘Burnside’ we will be visiting local community organisations and bringing visitors into our classroom! We will be learning about what we can do to meet the needs and wants of the local people living in Burnside.

PE Days

  • Our P.E days will now be on Monday and Tuesday.
  • For the next 8 weeks we are lucky enough to have the Old Firm Alliance taking our Tuesday P.E sessions.   The Rangers FC and Celtic FC coaches are focussing on football skills delivered alongside positive lifestyle messages.
  • Children should ensure that they have all the necessary equipment available on the correct days. As we hope to have our PE lesson outdoors on a Monday we ask that they come with a pair of outdoor sports shoes.  As the children will also take part in regular outdoor learning it would be useful to have their P.E kit in school most days.

Indoor Shoes
Please remember to bring in a pair of indoor shoes to change into if you have not done so already.
